Why I bought this stone. #002 Spodumene

Species: Natural Spodumene.

Color: Slightly Purplish Blue.

I was in Bangkok.

A Pakistani broker brought some stones to a friend’s booth at the JTC, the Jewelry Trade Center.

I happened to be there.

A few pale purple stones.

The broker said they were kunzite.

For kunzite, that’s a beautiful stone, and more purple than usual.

That was my first impression.

It caught my interest, so I asked him to bring them again another day.

This time, to our workshop in Bangkok.

Fourteen or fifteen pieces, I think.

I usually start with the biggest stones.

This time was no different.

The one that stopped my hand was the smaller of the two asscher cuts.

The color is good.

The make is good, and the symmetry is right.

It has a deep bottom.

But that is exactly why the color holds.

In the end, I chose three.

The broker said he was going back to Pakistan for a while and would get them certified, and took the stones with him.

Some time later, the stones came back, with reports.

The report said this:

Species: Natural Spodumene.

Color: Slightly Purplish Blue.

Blue.

The stone I had taken for a purplish kunzite was, to the lab, a slightly purplish blue spodumene.

Kunzite is the name given to spodumene that is pink to pale lilac.

This stone, apparently, was not that color.

So I don’t call it kunzite.

I call it spodumene.

The name changed. The stone didn’t.

Neither did the reason my hand stopped.

There is one problem, though.

Four years on, this stone still hasn’t become a piece of jewelry.

There are two reasons.

Spodumene is a stone that can lose its color in light.

So I am watching to see whether it fades.

The other reason.

The design hasn’t come to me yet.

My hand stopped, but nothing has moved since.

Some stones are like that.

Four years.

I’m still looking.
